I have been hearing bits and pieces about Franklin’s new burger joint, Cleaver’s, for the last couple of weeks, and thanks to Nanny taking the kiddos for the night, Nick and I had the chance to experience it for ourselves and I just want to start by saying… WOW!
If you haven’t heard about it, Cleaver’s opened earlier this year and is located in the Westgate Plaza where Gondolas used to be. They have one focus… burgers. But not just any burgers. Beef, Bison, Turkey, Ostrich, Elk, Veggie, Venison, Lamb, and Chicken burgers. They are geared toward take out, however, they do have indoor seating options.
I ordered the Cleaver’s— which is a beef patty — I switched to bison — with cheddar, house sauce, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle. I could barely finish it. It was juicy, luscious, perfectly season and fresh. Their signature burgers come with fries and a drink all for between $12.99 and $19.99. Most of the users are $12.99 with the exception of the Carolina, which has pimento cheese ($14.99), and The Boss, which has a triple beef patty and sits at $19.99. But even at $19.99, it includes the cost of a drink and fries, so not bad at all.
Nick got the So Spicy burger which comes with a blackened beef patty pepper jack cheese, house sauce, jalapeño, lettuce, and tomato — but he doesn’t like anything green on his burgers so he asked for no tomato. He likes a little kick to everything and he said it was cooked to perfection with just the right amount of bite.
The bread that they use was delicious. The buns were toasted and had sesame seeds on top. The bread was probably as good as the meat itself. And the french fries were amazing. They are thick cut and perfectly seasoned!
If you don’t want one of their signature burgers, that’s ok too because they have a build your own option that lets you decide everything from the type of protein you want to how you want to dress it up.
I honestly have no complaints. The service was super fast. There isn’t any ambiance as the business is geared toward take out, so don’t expect to be served as the table or have refills on your drinks. Just like Gondolas, the drinking fountain is serve yourself and the tables on the inside are limited, even without the consideration of COVID19. But with the online ordering option, pick up is a breeze. They even deliver!
As a momma — I would say that it is more of a date night option and less of a family meal. They don’t have any type of a kid’s menu at the moment and I don’t see my kids appreciating a $13 burger.
All the employees were wearing masks and cleaned tables regularly while we were there. Overall, I would say that you would be hard-pressed to find a better burger in Macon County at the moment, which would make sense since burgers are the only thing they do.
Cleaver’s is located at 349 Westgate Plaza, Franklin, NC 28734.
