Franklin Board approves 15% raise for Town Manager

Last night, the Franklin Town Council concluded their monthly meeting with the approval of a pay raise for Town Manager Aimee Owens. Owens has served as the town manager for two years since she began her service with the town in September 2021.

Fatz Cafe permanently closes doors

Fatz Cafe closed its doors suddenly Wednesday afternoon. A letter posted on the door of the Franklin location confirmed the closure and said it was a company-wide closure.

Bartram Academy will welcome students in Macon County this school year

Union Academy is on a new adventure. Following a unanimous 5-0 school board vote, Union Academy is now Bartram Academy - home of the Explorers.

Union Academy, Macon County Schools’ alternative education school, is on a new adventure transforming into Bartram Academy - Home of the Explorers. This exciting change reflects the school's dedication to fostering a spirit of curiosity, adventure, and growth in its students.

The decision to rename the institution was driven by a change in school leadership, along with the possibility of consolidation with Franklin High School. An award of a million-dollar grant from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction also factored into the timing of the decision.

Woman arrested after falsely reporting her own death

Margaret Frances "Maggie" Elizabeth Sweeney, a 37-year-old resident of Franklin was arrested by the Franklin Police Department (FPD) on Monday, August 21, 2023. The arrest follows a series of false reports that Sweeney allegedly made, resulting in a substantial waste of law enforcement resources and causing unnecessary panic within the community.

Macon County Schools welcome new leadership for 2023-24 school year; most schools will provide free lunch

When students return for school next week, it is likely there will be new faces within their school's administration to greet them.

In addition to the first new Superintendent for Macon County Schools in a decade with Josh Lynch being named as Dr. Chris Baldwin's successor this summer, seven out of the district's 12 schools will have new members of their administration.

While most of the faces eager to greet students next week will be familiar faces for parents, as they have transitioned from other roles within the school system, students in Highlands School will have a new Assistant Principal who will still be unpacking her boxes when the first bell rings.
