Community initiative aims to help those most in need

By Kristin Fox

Hands-on Jackson is a day where Jackson County citizens rally together to lend a helping hand to those who need a little extra assistance. Volunteers and sponsors are needed for Jackson County’s annual community event, Hands on Jackson, to help those in need.

The 5th annual Hands on Jackson event is scheduled for October 12, 2023. The event is organized by the Hands on Jackson Advisory Committee which is comprised of human service agencies, volunteers, and businesses.

The collaboration is focused on providing assistance to neighbors in need through mobilizing community volunteer teams of all skill levels and matching them with needs. Jobs will range from building ramps to cleaning yards, windows, and gutters. Supplies will be provided to the teams in advance and will be purchased through sponsorships.

A kickoff breakfast sponsored by Duke Energy will start that morning at 8:00 a.m. at the Sylva First Baptist Mission and Fellowship Center before the teams report to their assigned jobs.

Volunteer teams, sponsorships and projects are needed for this upcoming event.

In addition, the event needs projects to work on. Projects must be $1,500 or less in material costs and able to be completed in one day by volunteers. No roofs, major structure repairs or items that require permits can be considered as a project. Allowed projects include ramps, stairs, cleaning windows & gutters, pressure washing, under-brushing, landscaping, and other similar projects.

If you know of someone in your community that needs help, please fill out a project sheet. Project information sheets are due by August 18th. Project sheets can be dropped off at the Department of Aging or emailed to eddiewells@jacksonnc.org.

Hands on Jackson is also looking for team leaders now so if you belong to a group, club, church, or business you can organize a volunteer team. To volunteer with a group or as an individual, please complete a volunteer application. Return volunteer sheets to Department of Aging ore email to jchicoine@mountainprojects.org.

Last year, Hands on Jackson raised over $15,000 to help with unmet needs in Jackson County. Sponsorships are needed to help surpass last year’s effort.

Hands on Jackson raised over $60,000 and completed over 125 projects in Jackson County during the last four events. The public is encouraged to make a tax-deductible contribution to the effort and join the list of event sponsors.
