Jackson County hosting bike rodeo May 1

The Jackson County Parks & Recreation Center, in Cullowhee, will host the Annual Jackson County Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 1st, from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. This is a free event for all Jackson County children. Children will participate in a variety of stations – bike safety checks, helmet inspections, learning to ride, bike skills courses for all ages, and group rides. A bike raffle will occur at approximately 11:20-11:30 AM including 5 free bicycles, raffled off into size appropriate categories; participants must be present to win. COVID-19 guidance will be followed during the event including face coverings worn by volunteers and participants, physical distancing and hand sanitizing stations will be available throughout the event. Any shared pieces of equipment will be disinfected between users.

Many community partners are sponsoring the event—Jackson County Department of Parks and Recreation, Jackson County Department of Public Health, Safe Routes to School, Safe Kids Jackson County, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Western Carolina University Bike Club, Western Carolina University Police Department, Western Carolina University Recreation Therapy, Western Carolina University Parks and Recreation Management, Nantahala SORBA, Jackson County Public Schools, Region A Partnership for Children and the Great Smokies Health Foundation. The following organizations are sponsoring the bikes that will be raffled at the event: Woodmen Life Chapter 560 Sylva, Wilson Family Chiropractic, Appalachian Funeral Home and Crematorium, Mountain Park Urgent Care and Family Practice, and Motion Makers Bike Shop.

In case of rain or bad weather, the bike rodeo will be postponed.
