Calliope Stage seeks local artists & writers for 2022 Calliope Shorts

SYLVA, NC (February 28, 2022) – Following a highly-successful inaugural production of Calliope Shorts: Firsts! in August 2021, Calliope Stage Company is now seeking WNC performance artists and writers to collaborate on its 2022 production of Calliope Shorts: Campfire Stories.

The 2021 Calliope Shorts: Firsts! engaged over 60 artists to produce 10 original theatrical Shorts. All ten Shorts were performed to sold-out audiences in downtown Sylva last summer.

In alignment with the company missionCalliope Shorts: Campfire Stories will be an original collaborative theatrical production capturing stories from within WNC. This call is open to amateur, emerging and established professional performing artists and writers of all ages and mediums (oral storytelling, music, dance, poetry, creative writing, acting, etc.). Artists must live, work, or have roots in Western North Carolina.

Individual artists will be assembled into pairings or small teams and work via in-person or over virtual and remote platforms (Zoom, FaceTime, phone, email, etc.) during the writing and development process. Each team will be responsible for creating an original theatrical production 15-20 minutes in length that dramatizes a story rooted in WNC. This year, our stories will be centered around the theme “Campfire Stories” and performed outdoors in fall at a rural farm setting. The resulting vignettes will reflect the artistic inclinations and points of view of the team creating it, and so we seek a diverse group of artists and mediums to collaborate with one another. All artists will be paid a stipend for their work.

To submit, please send a brief explanation of your interest along with a resume to hello@calliopestage.com. Please make the subject line “CALL FOR ARTISTS.” We also welcome digital portfolios, clips of your work, links to your artist website and/or social media sites, etc. – anything you feel would help us get an idea of who you are as an artist or creator. We may request a virtual meeting with you after we receive your submission to get to know you further. Submissions are due by March 20, 2022.
