SYLVA NC – Smoky Mountain High School Principal Evelyn Graning is the 2022-23 Principal of the Year for Jackson County Public Schools. An 18-year veteran educator, she has been an administrator at the school for the past seven years.
“It has been one of the biggest blessings in my life to serve as principal at Smoky Mountain High School,” Graning said. “We simply have the best staff and students, and I think of them as my Mustang family. I am blown away by this honor.”
Graning moved to Jackson County in 1985 and attended Fairview School and Smoky Mountain High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from NC State University, a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Johns Hopkins University and a Certificate in School Leadership from Western Carolina University.
“Ms. Graning is an advocate for her students and staff,” Superintendent Dr. Dana Ayers said. “She builds relationships with her students and emphasizes teacher leadership. It is a great honor for her to be recognized by her peers.”
Graning will represent Jackson County Public Schools later this year at the regional level of the Wells Fargo North Carolina Principal of the Year Program.
