Top NC educator visits Jackson County Public School

SYLVA, NC – Jackson County Public Schools received a visit from the 2021 Burroughs Wellcome North Carolina Teacher of the Year on Wednesday, August 25.  Eugenia Floyd, a 4th grade teacher at Mary Scroggs Elementary School in Chapel Hill spent the morning touring Scotts Creek School and Jackson County Early College.

As the NC Teacher of the Year, Floyd is an ambassador for teachers and serves as an advisor to the NC Board of Education for two years.  She was accompanied by Jackson County Superintendent Dr. Dana Ayers, Chief Academic Officer Angie Dills, Jackson County Teacher of the Year Charity Jamison and Dr. Jeremy Gibbs from the NC Department of Public Instruction.

“I want to make sure I have a really good picture of the wonderful things happening throughout our state, so I’m here in Jackson County to see how things are going,” Floyd said.  “I’m excited.”

It didn’t take long for Floyd to see things she liked during the student-led tours she received at each school.

“I began the day with students standing before me ready to show me their school,” she said following her visit to Scotts Creek.  “The warmth and leadership that students are already getting at an elementary level were as clear as day.”

At Jackson County Early College, Floyd was impressed with the school’s focus on service learning and the opportunities students have to give back to their community.

“I’m very happy and just ecstatic about where Jackson County is and how they are preparing our students for the future,” Floyd said.  “Jackson County is truly fostering and helping children prepare for life beyond the classroom.”
