It takes some creativity to keep the kiddos busy these days, and with options like movie theaters and playgrounds, unable to operate (other than the awesome drive-in movie option Ruby Cinemas has been hosting) finding a place to get out and stretch your legs with the family can be tough. Located on the outskirts of Franklin on US 64 sits Parker Meadows Sports Complex, one of Macon County’s many hidden gems.
The park, which is best known for its multi-sized baseball/softball fields, has become a destination for families looking for some fun in the sun…while social distancing.
This Sunday morning, the park was full of groups spread around the park safely enjoying the summer sun. Discover Church was set up on the soccer fields for Sunday morning worship, families floated down the creek from one end of the park to the other, and joggers and cyclist raced around the one mile track circling the park. It really has become an oasis during the COVID19 pandemic.
Parker Meadows was built in 2015 and cost the county just under $2 million. It has since been used for regional and state baseball tournaments, church league softball, little league baseball, and as a gathering place for school field trips and community events. The multi-acre park’s open field plays host to the perfect destination for social distancing, while still getting to enjoy the outdoors.
Families can cool off in the creek by putting in by the boat dock and floating down about 15 minutes to the opposite end of the park. The shaded walkway back is quick and makes for the perfect loop. For those wanting a longer trip, park an extra car at the industrial park. If you start at Parker Meadows and float down, you can spend just over an hour and a half floating down the water before heading back to Parker Meadows for a picnic at the covered shelter.
The one mile walking trail outside of the border of the park is all paved, perfect for runners or bikes. Read2Me even has a Story Walk along the path in one corner of the park, a great family activity of reading and exercise.
Parker Meadows is maintained by the Macon County Recreation Department and is located at 4306 Patton Road Franklin, NC 28734.
