Mobile Breast Center scheduled for stops in Swain and Jackson this month

Last updated on February 12, 2022

Despite the critical role annual mammograms take in detecting breast cancer before it’s too late, for many across Western North Carolina, access to the needed technology is oftentimes difficult.

This Thursday, February 3, the Mobile Breast Center 3D Mammography bus will be parked at the Swain County Health Department providing services by apportionment.

The bus is provided by Invision Diagnostics, an Asheville-based company, which provides mobile mammograms to more than 7,500 women in Western North Carolina annually. Invision’s mammogram buses are equipped with the latest 3D mammogram technology, which is paramount for women with dense breast tissue.

The mobile mammogram buses are on the road seven days a week not just in Western North Carolina, but all throughout the Southeast to make breast cancer screening accessible and hassle-free. They collaborate with medical practices, corporations and businesses, schools, and communities to bring mammograms to patients where they work and live.

To be eligible for screening, women must be 35 years or older and it must have been one year since their previous screening. Women can also not be pregnant or breastfeeding.

Patients will be required to provide a primary care physician or OBGYN to release the results too… however they do not need an order or prescription to receive the scan. Patients are asked to bring a photo ID and an insurance card as billing is processed through insurance, although self-pay options are available.

In addition to February 3 at the Swain County Health Department, the mobile unit will also be at the following locations:

Tallulah Community Health Center in Robbinsville-February 9 & 10NC

Blue Ridge School in Cashiers -February 22, 2022

Cullowhee Valley School in Sylva- February 23, 2022
