Arrest made in 2013 murder of Cherokee woman

Just shy of the 10 year anniversary of the death or Marie Walkingstick Pheasant, the Cherokee Indian Police Department announced an arrest has finally been made.

Ernest Pheasant, 46, was arrested and is being charged with Homicide in the first degree, in the 2013 death of 26-year-old Marie Walkingstick Pheasant. Additionally, Ernest Pheasant has been charged with Possession of firearm etc. by felon, tampering with witnesses, Domestic violence and dating violence, and tampering with evidence. All are felony charges.

The Cherokee Indian Police Department worked with the FBI, and BIA during the investigation that lead to today’s arrest.

The body of 26-year-old Marie Walkingstick Pheasant was found inside a burning vehicle in the Big Cove community of the Qualla Boundary on Dec. 29, 2013.

Initially, law enforcement offered a $5,000 for information leading to an arrest, however, the reward was increased to $50,000 in November 2022.
