Eastgate Drive fire investigation finds no foul play

On September 20, 2023, in the early hours of the morning, law enforcement and multiple fire agencies responded to a structure fire on Eastgate Drive in Sylva, NC.

It was determined that a joint investigation was necessary to investigate the cause of the fire and determine if any criminal activity took place. The agencies conducting this investigation are the Jackson County Fire Marshal’s Office, Sylva Police Department, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office also played a crucial role during the initial portion of this investigation.

Sylva Police Department investigators responded to the scene of the fire. They immediately began their part of this investigation. This investigation included steps like creating a timeline for this fire, interviewing several witnesses and neighbors around the fire, and determining that the building’s doors and windows were secure when the first responders arrived. The fire department had to force entry to start fighting the fire.

The Sylva Police Department’s investigation into this fire has revealed no evidence of foul play.
