Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Matthew Wike confirmed today that 45-year-old Edward Columbus Taylor died while in custody at the Jackson County Detention Center.
Taylor, which had the Best Western in Dillsboro listed as his address at the time of his arrest, was arrested on June 10 and was being held on a Failure to Appear and a Child Support Purge.
According to Wike, Taylor was found unresponsive in his cell on Sunday, June 26th.
“EMS was contacted as well as staff attempting life-saving measures,” said Wike. “Unfortunately, the inmate passed away. As with all in-custody deaths, the NCSBI was contacted to investigate.
Wike also stated that any further questions about the investigation should be referred to the NCSBI. Additional information will be shared once made available.
