North Carolina Senator Kevin Corbin worked with NC House Rep Mike Clampitt to identify community needs in Swain County being met by non-profits that could benefit from the Senate’s local project reserve fund allotted to individual Senators.
With around $700,000 of discretionary funding for NC Senate District 50, Sen. Corbin presented $25,000 to Life Choice Pregnancy Care Center of Western North Carolina last week to assist in general operational costs of the new non-profit.
“With the overturning of Roe vs Wade on the federal level, the authority regarding abortion legislation was rightfully returned to the states,” said Sen. Corbin. “As lawmakers, we now have more responsibility than ever to protect mothers and babies in our state. North Carolina currently has some of the most liberal laws surrounding abortion, which means we are seeing people travel here from other states seeking an abortion. While we work on the state level to make the necessary changes to protect the unborn, we also have to make sure we are balancing that by ensuring women have adequate access to healthcare and resources to care for their children, not only while pregnant but after birth as well. That is why I worked with Senator Jim Burgin to expand Medicaid access to women a year postpartum, so women who have a child are able to properly care for that child in the earliest, most vulnerable days for both the mother and child. Allocating these funds to local organizations like the Life Choice Pregnancy Care Center will ensure that women in our communities have access to resources to birth healthy babies. As my colleagues in the NC General Assembly continue negotiations to fully expand Medicaid, increasing access to health insurance to 600,000 North Carolinians, hopefully, we will soon reach a resolution that will be for the betterment of our entire state.”
