Macon County Sheriff’s Office launches murder investigation New Years Day

On January 1, 2023 at approximately 12:00 pm Macon County Deputies were dispatched to a residence in the Walnut Creek area following a 911 call that had been placed in reference to an ongoing dispute. Upon arrival, deputies found a male victim at the location and it was obvious to responding deputies that the victim had been involved in the reported altercation. The victim was unresponsive at the time of the arrival. Macon County EMS and Cullasaja First Responders responded but the victim, later identified as 30 yar old Nathan Humphries, was determined to be deceased.
Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Unit responded to the scene and initiated an investigation into the incident. The District Attorney’s Office also assisted them. An autopsy has been requested and is expected to take place in the coming days.
“While this is an ongoing investigation we believe there is no immediate threat to the community and is an isolated incident,” Sheriff Brent Holbrooks states.
Detectives will continue to investigate the incident and will follow up with all information they are able to obtain.
