FRANKLIN, NC (Feb. 9, 2022) – The Nantahala Ranger District is planning to conduct a 2,000-acre prescribed burn today, February 9 in Macon County. The burn unit is located in the Nantahala community near Appletree campground.
For visitor and firefighter safety the Bartram Trail will be temporarily closed for the day between the Appletree trailhead and the trailhead located at the Duke powerhouse in the Nantahala Gorge.
The goal of this prescribed burn is to reduce fuels within the understory of the forest to help reduce the risk of wildfires.
